Well written by someone who truly feels much of the same type pain as his subjects feel. And indeed, when he occasionally does get out of the way the stories assume their true power. and because I admire Meredith Viera so much. I have mixed feelings about this book.

This volume presents the authentic voices of five individuals living with severe, chronic illness. He loves life and has been creative and determined in keeping it that way, despite the progressive nature of the illness. Alone with Illness. Easy to follow and so easy to read. Mr. Cohen deals with chronic illness himself. I especially identified with the chapter where he spoke about the cognition problems, the chapter about the children and the final chapter about himself and the self-loathing and the anger which I know myself are my daily companions. Intimately involved with these patients' lives, Cohen formed intense relationships with each, talked to their families and friends, and shared joy, even in heart-breaking setbacks.Though each individual's illness wreaks havoc in a different way, Cohen shows how their experiences are strikingly similar and offer lessons for us all—on self-determination, on courage in the face of adversity and public ignorance, on keeping hope alive, and on finding strength and peace under the most difficult of circumstances.We are strong at the broken places, stronger than we think.
