I burned through this book like it was on fire.

I can see where people are disappointed because the end hints at much more story to come and has an unresolved goal, but I think as a character study it's satisfyingly complete. He's even contemplated suicide. But I really enjoyed the way Mr Ames writes and will look out more of his work.

And this unfisnished feeling stay with you after closing the book, not that you regret to have read it, but certainly disappointed it didn’t have a proper ending. Hardboiled like crazy.. Fantastically brutal and really engaging. There are two things I didn’t like. Read it because of the film.Loved it.Film (which i watched afterwards) is more of a feminist tract, and completely alters the plot line and ending.

Welcome back. When a job spins out of control, Joe's nightmares overtake him as a conspiracy is uncovered leading to what may be his death trip or his awakening. The book is really a novella which takes about 90 mins to read. He's very good at what he does, but he wonders, at age 48, if he's slipping. You Were Never Really Here by Jonathan Ames Book Review. A book reviewer’s ideal tome is short, easy to read and yet leaves them with lots to say. i call it poetry because it is so stripped down, language minimal, plot simple but complex, concise but emotional, basically everything i love in poetry. Joe is damaged and fully aware of his derangement. It's a perfect example of how to tell a tale. The author trips hard on one bit of lingo that the character would definitely use differently, but it's far from fatal to the narrative. Your recently viewed items and featured recommendations Diverse voices and sparkling debuts dominate today's contemporary short story collections. From the very first page, this book slams you in the face. Especially if you are a fan of noir fiction. The writing is compelling and spare; dark and gritty. It’s really intense. Reads quickly though. Noir at its best. Stripped-down hardboiled narrative, but so stripped-down it ultimately feels like there's no there there. Now he has been hired to save the daughter of aIn a change of pace and authorial style, I also read You Were Never Really Here by Jonathan Ames, a novella that runs to 87 pages and soon to be a feature film starring Joaquin Phoenix. Their vulnerability must resemble the vulnerability he felt as a young child being beaten by an adult.

You Were Never Really Here (Movie Tie-In) Too often stories that deal with these sort of subjects devolve into torture porn and not being familiar with the author I didn't really know what to expect. I'm very annoyed and very impressed. If revenge is a dish best served cold, Joe (the main character of this story) is serving up some icy entrees. This is a pleasure to read. Published

Second, the ending is way to open, at this point it isn’t an open ending, it just isn’t an ending. But the story at the root of it seemed like something I should enjoy, so I was surprised and intrigued when I saw this novella sitting on the library shelf. i think i have to watch the film...3,5/5.

Interesting to see how it was altered for the film’s sake and would recommend to those looking for a fantastic novella with grit or fans of the film. The shadow of death and hopeless despair hangs over this sIf revenge is a dish best served cold, Joe (the main character of this story) is serving up some icy entrees. Anyway, the book includes 100ish dark, gritty and tight pages which are really good and not at all confusing like the movie /nothing wrong with that it's just different/. I read this is two sittings but could’ve easily done it in one. Short, brutal and unmissable. It’s not a long book, so have something to look forward to reading after. Really enjoyed the book and look forward to the movie. That would be the kind of read I would like to share with my father, he would have love it, if he was a reader. Shit goes sideways. I hadn't associated Ames with hard crime fiction like this previously In order to navigate out of this carousel please use your heading shortcut key to navigate to the next or previous heading.
